But RU was very protective of its troops, land means nothing unless it is of strategic value so they withdraw knowing it can always be taken back later and saving troops was the most important thing. Also RU's artillery had longer range, so their losses were minimal compared to RU

  9.  @margaritadubrovina7063  UA's constution states neutrality at the time of the breakup of the USSR, of course when it suits the Govt to go against their constitution they did no doubt believing the US that RU will fall and UA can join the USA in access of RU's oil, gas and mineral wealth. proof of how generous RU was that they were prepared for the Donbas to remain part of UA if the peace agreement was signed in April 2022.
