DisguisedNinjas The only thing is. Great Mary Sues are difficult to create if the story revolves around them. Which is why the best Mary Sue stories are the ones where the story shows off all the other characters and only bring in the Mary Sue when needed. Kin to that of One Punch Man. Unless you use Plot Armor, then a Mary Sue is not inherently bad. Difficult to design, but not bad. Just make them believable under the story's logic. Similar to the anime Overlord. Not all MCs in a story have to relate to "multiple people"; otherwise, that is just pandering... No wonder why "the hero will always succeed in the end." Sometimes, I want the villain to succeed even though they most likely will not, (Or have the story follow the villain instead of the hero). Regardless, it is all about the execution of the story.

Flufux Same here. I prefer the definition of Mary Sue than who the Mary Sue character is. And you know what... Mary Sues do not EXIST (Not really but kind of true). It is just bad writing and Plot Armor. Many things that stack on top of each other to create what people call a "Mary sue"... A fandom more than anything else. If we were to take this trope seriously, then every character is a Mary/Anti Sue. Yes, there are true Mary Sue characters out there (Aka. Kirito), but it is all about context/execution. I.E., there are great Mary Sues and worst Mary Sues.

Fem Portagal The POV of a character is not a Mary Sue. A story that revolves around a character is not a Mary Sue. The 90% to 100% of "perfection" is a Mary Sue if and only if the writing/details is done terribly. Kin to that of Plot Armor.

ChevaliersEmeraude To be honest, the whole Mary Sue thing has lost its meaning. In the end, it is all about execution, and Erza is not a Mary Sue by any means. People are just mistaking OP characters, believable characters set within the rules of the world, and Plot Armor as a Mary Sue. By their logic, even Gods and entities beyond the 4th dimension is a Mary Sue simply because people force that idea onto those characters. If the story is not believable within its world, then we have a legitimate problem. However, in a great story that acts like a puzzle. Everything falls into place. "How do you write a story where Gods, reality warping, and The One Above All exist?" (Rhetorical question) To state that Mary Sues should be avoided is to state that people who posses a higher existence is not allowed to exist in the present story. In reality or in fiction, there is no such thing as a Marry Sue. Just very bad writing.

If a character is OP, then they are OP. Not a Mary Sue.

Nathan Brown It is the right post. Otherwise, I would not write anything. What I mean by my comment is that, Mary Sues do not exist as an actual trope unless it is clearly obvious or what I stated in the quote, (Basically, terrible writing overall). "If everyone is a Mary Sue, then no one will be". I can write an essay but I would rather not. I hope people do not mistaken the "OP" for a Mary Sue unless it falls into what I just wrote. "Context/Details" will determine if a character is a Mary Sue. Never ignore that.

Nathan Brown My comment is more of an add on to your statement. I am not countering nor stating anything. Unless a story is painfully obvious where a mary sue can be seen, then actually finding one within a great story is impossible. Look at the Marvel Universe where characters can straight up use hacks like reality warping. Again, I wanted to add to your comment. Not to counter or disprove anything. Usually a Mary Sue revolves around one character, but as everything goes, it is all about implementation.

In my opinion, besides video game writing, story writing as in Anime is difficult to create but I will say this. A character that is set up as the "expected trope" is more readable and equal to a character that is "human". Basically, I do not care if a character was given hacks or is OP for as long as the story hold its own beliefs within the confines of the story... Make your story believable even if it is off the top. Do that, then this Mary Sue thing is nonexistent. Otherwise, everything is both a Mary Sue and an Anti Sue.

Jason Q A Mary Sue is not inherently bad. It is just terrible writing. Creating a great story around a Mary Sue is more difficult than creating a story with a bunch of "expected/human" characters. I have seen great Mary Sue and worst Mary Sue. Mainly Anime/Gaming. (I know that Games are different but its narrative is still under the same model as any story). One Punch Man and Overlord are great examples on creating a great Mary Sues. (It only boils down to, "can you write a great story with OP characters or not?". If everyone is a Mary Sue, then no one will be a Mary Sue.)

88Zuke It is all about execution. I have seen great Mary Sues that made the story great, and worst Mary Sues that add no depth in the story. Or at least, worst Mary Sues are more likely to act as a utility rather than a believable entity even if they stood among the power levels of Gods. Like an illusion, it is all about creating a belief within the illusionist's logic. Kind of like, how magic systems are created in a story.

wishbone346 A Mary Sue can exist just like Thanos and OP Gods like The One Above All. It is more likely that a writer did not create a better story or give a situation that is at the level of the Mary Sue character. Of course, there is a thing called "Plot Armor". Bad writing and plot armor tends to create a stale environment for a Mary Sue; thus, Mary Sues are boring. Also, not giving detail about things can also give off a distaste for a Mary Sue. In short, Mary Sue characters are not bad. The writing that is built around them is bad. The anime Overlord and One Punch Man, is a perfect example on how a Marry Sue should be done. Outside of anime, another great example is Marvel's Thanos during the Infinity War. A villain version of a Mary (Gary) Sue. Again, a Marry Sue character is not all bad because the world in which they exist is not built for them... Unless you use Plot Armor then I do not know what else to say. Like an illusion, make it feel believable under the illusionist's logic.
