@squirepraggerstope3591 it turning a weakness (the exhusts) into a strength (survivability). Good practical engineering.

You might want to refine your country knowledge.
5
It's good you feel so passionate about something that doesn't have fixed definition.

Ramps are newer than catapults. And lots of nation use them. Everyone but the US and France.
3
The navy is unbalanced towards carriers as it is. We need more frigates, subs and aircraft before we need a third carrier.
3
Ships are historically all "she's".
3
@thatdutchguy2882 the royals are paid for from the crown estate not tax revenue. And there tourist effect is huge.
3
I hope they do. A carrier is a waste for the Russian Navy, they don't have the F35B which it's designed around and copies tend to be worse anyway.
3
@rayhan_2k841 it's not really rearming as they are generally replacing older ships as part of the normal running of things.
3
We won't form two battle groups, two is for cover when one is being maintained. For one with have enough ships. And we fight with the US nor for the US. US F35s on her is excellent value for the UK taxpayer. We don't have to pay for them.
2
Saying 70 would be much more misleading. That would only be in an extreme circumstance and not for years as we won't have the jets. When she sails with 24 F35B people will be disappointed when that's a perfectly normal load.

@dont_give_a_flying_f a Type 26 is the size of a destroyer, sea ceptor has some area defence ability. It has to be in the destrpyer concersation. Our six destroyers give us two dedicated air defence ships for a carrier group, that a good amount. Adding numbers it would be better to go with the more general purpose Type 26, or even the Type 31 with the idea to keep all Type 26s free to fight.
2
@kickboxerforever00 we don't even crew all the ships we have. Bulwark in extended readiness.
2
@Benjd0 maybe he just accepts Britannia rules the waves so all waters are our waters.

@brentsummers7377 The only reason there'd be US aircraft on board is because we were fighting together. We'd agree strategy because that's what you have to do fighting with allies. There no loss there. And there's a lot of gain in a defensive sense having a full air wing. You appear to be under the impression we don't have air craft. We already have 18 F35 and have order 17 more. That will continue to grow. In less than a decade we will easily be able to deploy the full 36. But even before that just 12 F35 and a complement of helicopters allows a whole range of operation we couldn't do without it.
1
@photoisca7386 no precision guided aid bombs from the F35s?
1
@hounslowparks2469 I wonder how they'll run it with the American amphibs. QE seems a better platform to be flying from so do you think they'll move over if there's spare room on her?
1
@hounslowparks2469 I think you missed "aid" part of my sentence. I was imagining medical supplies deployed by F35.
1
The T31 is 5.7k tonnes, that's isn't a glorified corvette.
1
@uropepe If the UK crashes in the worse possible way and we lose 20% of our GDP we'd still be spending £30bn a year. That might cover petrol...
1
What ship would that be then?
1
@ryancoulson9448 what ship has China built in 6 months thats bigger than this?
1
It's doesn't, like when the EU puts tariffs on the US goods in response to the US doing it on theirs.
1
@MattCellaneous tell that to Harley Davidson. And NATO has nothing to do with trade, so if your taking trade you need to talk EU.
1
Two baskets
1
@donaldmikulec4332 they won't be at sea at the same time much. But the whole of eggs in one basket is you don't have a backup, and we have one.
1
How are the destroyers obsolete? They may be the best AAW destroyers in the world, if not they are certainly high up. And they are soon to be joined by possibly the best ASW frigates.

@okcantbelieveit294 We can put out a very capable carrier defence force, it might not be as good as Americans by raw numbers but the fact we have specialist means in some ways it will be better, for example a Type 26 will be a better sub hunter than an Arleigh Burke. What is the best? Especially for a destroyer, where a cruiser is likely better. Our destroyers can't do everything the best but they are excelllent at the job they were designed for. We have just chosen a Type 31 and cut steel on the second Type 26. It's going as planned. Those numbers are designed for a carrier group with 4 escorts. Note the US has 91 escorts for 11 carriers, we have 19 for 2, that actually puts us 1 ahead per carrier. The penny counters have been winning for a while but they had reason, the end of the Cold war was a very good reason to shrink our forces. All this might change in the future. But at the moment we've got an improving navy, enjoy it.

That HMS Vanguard was built for a war that had ended, how is that the same?
1
We have it

Who are you selling to? Italy who have the Cavour or Japan who have the Izumo?
