  1. That's true, the risk is miscalculation. If Putin thinks Europe is divided and he might act and the US will end up sucked into a war. The US guarantee prevents that.

  2. @thebarkingmouse  I agree to an extent, but it easy to overestimate what is about helping others and what is about the US securing it own interests. The US wants a presence in Europe and the far east because it makes the Pacific and Atlantic into its backyard.
