@henryfchapman3544 "ruin" is a pretty strong word for 4% over 15 years. We're unlikely to even hit a recession.

This is the core any NATO force will be built around, got to see us exercising together. I want to know the scenario now though, they kept tantalising us about it.
16
@kunaalsharma1039 Putin isn't suicidal he won't use nukes for anything short of an invasion of the mother country. It's too likely to lead to the end of the world as we know it.
15
Of course it will be an unspecific enemy that comes from the east and happens to speak Russian but I want to know numbers, which planes are playing the enemy, results, tactic. All the stuff our airforces can't tell us.
9
@1chish we spend money on our armed forces not a NATO armed force. Not being in alliance with Germany for example just means 10s of billions of defence budget we're not allied with, it doesn't save us money. Other nations do Baltic patrolling. Even if they don't do there fair share, they do some work that we don't have to.
8
You're always going to train, from a European perspective Russia is the only possible threat to NATO, so of course they'll train with Russia in mind.
5
@1chish do you think NATO is for the UKs defence? It's for the defence of the little guys like the Baltic states. And for interoperability, which you need other nations to operate with.
3
@AndresGrimace Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey are all NATO members, hence the presence in the Black sea, as well as moral support for the Ukraine and Georgia who are being bullied by Russia. NATO isn't looking for war with Russia, why would it be?
3
@UCxCdBMA6K00EO0peRP9o3Mw NATO isn't a construct of the US, it's built of the three perminant security council members that are in it. And it hasn't expanded by US pressure but by fear of Russian suppression. From the history of the Soviets to Russia starting its new life with force in Chechnya. The US funded all those hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians?
2
@ThunderAppeal I don't, but Russia isn't even playing by the rules it set in the Cold war. Annexing territory and attacking exchanged spies. Regardless a rule of self preservation is one even they won't challenge.
2
The body of the jet itself works as a wing plus the enclosed weapons help.
2
@charlesfisher3983 possibly, but the inclusion of SAMs that is problematic, I think Kaliningrad is closer than Finland but still a long way off the North Sea. Also they'd need refueling aircraft for fighters.
1
@garwhittaker3743 it's still about 5 years until we get the absolute minimum 48 F35B. 10 years til we get the almost certain 90ish. There will always be speculation about the F35A until we get beyond that. point. But the plans are all F35B.
1
@timmurphy5541 have 96% of the jets and ships?
1
I dont understand. The Rafale looks like a Typhoon with an fat face and the refuel pipe isn't ideal. Can you explain the appeal?
1
Where have we been pushing Russia borders? Russia complains about us being in neighbouring soveign countries by invitation as if they have the right to dominate them.
1
@ThunderAppeal No I don't know. That's why I asked. I like to expand my perspectives as tend to talk to like minded people in real life. And the idea that Russia could deliver an ass whooping that didn't lead to nuclear war isn't credible.
1
@ThunderAppeal I'm not sure if bringing about the end of the world qualify as an ass whooping...
1
@Xzibit9 no one's suggested they will stop trading, it's that trade levels will reduce.
1
@vetren23 a recession is negative growth. In the UK it has to last for two consecutive quarters. 4% over 15 years is about 0.25% a year, normalish growth is about 2%, so little chance of negative growth.
1
@vetren23 4% lower than normal over 15 years, so if it would have been 2% it now 1.75%.
1
james mcbride there are single months of negative growth but this years forecast is 1.3% growth (and that down partly because of th global economy generally). No deal might change that, when I last posted that seemed much less likely. The pound falling is more likely to increase your car price, as imports will be more expensive.
1
French rafales all the way, and if they're wielding meteors it isn't even a fair fight. India suffer from too many different platforms though, know your enemy and yourself and you'll give yourself a chance.

@notsomalicious4435 The Tornado airframes are getting too old. Though they can still do a job, maintenance times and costs are shooting up.
1
@notsomalicious4435 in part because we're retiring ours they can be cannibalised to keep others flying as our harriers helped the USMC keep there's flying. But its also about preferences. Ours is to be small but top of the line. Italy cancelled the last of there Typhoon purchases, Germany aren't getting the F35. Its not that there unusable but it's not a zero sum game and the maths is moving against the Tornado. From what I've seen it more about putting money into the Typhoon rather than the F35. Getting new weapons integrated and existing aircraft up to spec so it is a true multirole jet.
1
@Rigel_6 doubt it, SU-57 is unimpressive and not going to to mass productive, the way he talks suggests he thinks Russia has something in reserve.
