  1. It not worth spending all the money to develop an aircraft alone. In terms of building the F35 is a net export as we build more in parts than we buy in aircarft.

  2.  @datonaone  why? I'd prefer to protect our industry than our pride. We build 15% of each F35. In total that's the equivalent of 450 aircraft. Build our own and we wouldn't even get get 138 we plan because of all the extra we'd need to spend on R+D.

  4. The Skill is increasingly in the battlespace awareness than actually flying the plane. Certainly pilots say it's an order of magnitude easier to take off and land than a Harrier.

  5.  @datonaone  I think we do, not necessarily today but 10-20 years time. Air defences are getting a lot better, both the ability of high end systems and the spread of cheap capable ones. This is what the F35 is designed for, breaking air defence networks.

  8. Past the stealth, the F35 is faster, longer range, larger weapons load and generations ahead in avionics, EW and communications.

  16.  @datonaone  If you look at those two conflicts you see why we have the emphasis on technology, though they are warnings against hubris. We won the zulu wars, because of our superior technology. We got a draw against the Chinese in there own backyard because of the quality of our troops. On Duncan you have to be taking out those MIGs to even care about that weakness. We may have too few type 45s, but type 42s couldn't do the job. We are a nation of only 65m, we don't have the massed industry on 1800s. We need some leverage. But I don't totally disagree and think we should be using some of the R+D towards making things cheaper as well as better.

  20.  @henryvagincourt  I don't think it just money, I like the lightning force idea overall. A couple of front line squadrons is fine day to day for the FAA but the ability to field a lot more in an emergency really gives us a lot more punch.
