It was the exciting jet of my childhood. I'll always have soft spot for it.

Typhoon can fight it's way through contested space, F35 flies through uncontested.

It's due to retire 2019. Still a few months to see it in action.

Ian Kendall. But it flies fast in a straight line so well.

If we still have the Tornado in hanger it might technically be true but I think we're going to sell them the the Germans for spare parts (they're keeping there's going another 5 years). But no we will have less jets.

It is expensive. They're supposed to be for £2m tanks. But then what's the cost of a soldier?

It won't be neutralised but it may be lessened and so our capabilities will lessen but plane development doesn't stop. These post in 10 years time will be talking abut the eurofighter replacement.

F35's will be filling up the Carriers first so this means the RAF can still be bombing in the mean time. F35s are best at ground attack though long term it's take that role.

The C isn't that impressive, it's heavier unloaded, further behind in development and less supported than the B. The extra range is nice but I don't see the extra payload as a big factor as it compromises stealth. Add the that CATOBAR has parts that can break and stop the whole fleet and a lower sortie rate and I'd go STOVL even without the cost difference.

Adrian Wainer. The UK didn't decide on the carrier and add the planes. It conceived the best plane and designed an aircraft carrier to facilitate it.

gladfly cost is a real thing. The government is sticking to 2% so anything spent in one place gets taken from another. Better to get the F35s faster than hold on to an out of date platform.
