I remember this phase of American foreign policy, in which the US supported the Afghani rebels against the Russians, celebrating their deep faith in God and their courage in waging a guerilla war against a super power in an effort to assert their own social and moral values. There was never any mention of what their values actually were, or how different their interpretation of what 'God' expected of them from the 'Christian' values of the West. That all came later, after the Taliban had defeated the Russians and turned on their own civilian population.

  2. Seems rather counter intuitive for the West to support a losely organised group of war lords who overty work against the values of the liberal, secular, materialistic West? It may well be the kind of inspirational approach that difuses the hatred, but it is extremely unlikely, given our current economic situation, don't you think?
