Seems like a fair argument if the person's only read 1 book of a 7 book series though. Arguably a lower fraction considering the 1st HP book is far and away the shortest of the bunch. So like... I dunno, 1/20th of the series? Like sure you can still criticize the series, but you're almost certainly missing a metric asston of the series context and largely arguing from a position of comparative ignorance.

@TheJosephjakob Kingsley has to have an interesting backstory. Movie Kingsley anyway. I mean here's a big black dude constantly in African-style dress.... With the most Tolkien-tastic made the hell up ultra-British name. The tale of Kingsley's gotta be a fascinating one.

I'd still call it overrated, but mostly because of what it's been turned into. Like if I hadn't seen it happen in front of me, I'd have called HP good, entertaining as shit as a kid, but not terribly dissimilar from most other teen fiction of the time period. Like I'd have guessed it'd probably end up being mostly forgotten about like Most teen fiction is good or not, by this point. Not "Worldwide phenomenon/straight up religious cult" grade popularity causing social drama. Like it was Good, but not THIS good, y'know?

@matrix91234 Can it not be both? I mean a lot of her book themes get a bit extra "yikesy" in hindsight now knowing her politics, but I wasn't calling the series Bad. But if you told me back in the early 00's that HP was going to become a bigger deal than Tolkien and start what's functionally a cult around itself due to sheer glut of fans, I'd have called you absolutely insane. It's really good as far as YA fiction goes (As long as you don't think about it much in detail, which is fine), but "Worldwide Phenomenon everyone's still enamored with multiple decades later" would come across as the more arrogant as shit expectation for the series if... Well if we didn't literally watch it happen. Like it's Good, but hardly THAT Good. Only requirement for overrated is that the overrated thing is in a Higher position of celebrity than it might have naturally warranted, not that the overrated thing's actually just hot garbage people are pretending to like for some reason.

@matrix91234 "It just sounds like every right winger argument. You know the type who whines about "Well i used to like superheroes BUT NOW THE WOKE STUFF IS IN THERE!" so i cant anymore. I mean cmon thats lame" ...I don't feel like this even remotely ties to anything in my comment. "Aslong as the story and characters are right, then who cares about the personal lame stuff" A lot of people, apparently. But I'm pretty sure my position was "I think it's good, but not uniquely special relative to most teen fiction outside of it's peculiarly massive cult following." Not "It's too anti-woke for me" or whatever.

@illinnyan4053 Fuck that shit, I want a Muggleborn. Harry grew up in the 90's, American cartoons were fucking buckwild back then. I'm shitnuking Death Eaters due to the glorious magical lessons of Bugs Bunny and anime! Purebloods think they're hot shit, but can you imagine what crazy shit the Muggleborns of the Anime Generation would unleash? Rowling's pure wizard community seems to be wildly unimaginative with magic.

@davidvenegas6401 "They were alot better than I could paint. I would even say they were good. But obviously he found a more efficient way of impacting history than through art." Well yeah, but if the standard for quality art is "Did a better job than me", then we're in trouble.
