  2.  @sarjim4381  What I remember from a few old books was that Hoover, CO of cruiser Honolulu and senior officer left alive after the night battle off Guadalcanal, got blamed for not directing a search and recovery of survivors after the Juneau blew up. The loss of the ship with the sensational death of the 5 Sullivan brothers was tragic, but it had been written (Samuel Morrison) that it was a personal grudge from an officer on the area commander's staff that cased blame on Hoover and resulted with his being removed from command and disgrace. This is as much as i know. Whether this was truly a grudge, another case of scapegoating and the USN looking to hang someone, is on the table for insight/ discussion.

  3.  @sarjim4381  thank you for the elaborate details. Did not know that Halsey was involved. Which brings up a related personal story. Many years ago, i had a friendly and lively chat with the then CO of USS The Sullivans, he made his point clear that (1) the name of his ship is "The Sullivans" (2) naming a DD Halsey was inappropriate because Halsey did not care about the lives of destroyer crews (e.g. The Typhoon) (3) Hoover and McVay were wrongly blamed.

  7.  @alecblunden8615 hint taken, let me try again. So true, left to it's own creativity, the USN would come up with the innovation of EMALS and AAG, which are still innovating.
