Morality doesn't need religion to define for you what is good and what is bad. Only a psychopath needs morality to be spelled out for you. Atheists derived their morality from social contracts and the golden rule. That is the only morality an atheist needs so he doesn't just go around killing people for their own enjoyment. Just because this guy brought into one psychopath's explaination of atheism doesn't mean he is correct.

+John H De Sade was a sadist, a psychopath, and clinically insane. Just because he wrote some crap about atheism it doesn't mean he represented atheism. De Sade is wrong, and Klavan based his opinion of atheism on one insane man's rambling. Well he is someone who believes in a fairy tale book written by insane men in the dessert. So I guess Klavan have a history of listening to insane men.

+Brendan Coulter So you don't think that you should follow the same rule as everyone else. That's what the golden rule is, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. So if you want to live in a society you don't want to follow that rule. You go around robbing others, and then in turn others can come and rob you. You kill others, and someone comes along and kills you. Do you like being killed? Its in your own interest to make a rule that says don't go around killing people. That's the basis of morality, you have your first rule, thou shall not kill. You don't need religion to come up with that rule.

+Brendan Coulter Those car sales men as you put it, They do follow the golden rule, they think its ok to misrepresent used cars to their customers, and in term they expect other used car sales men to cheat them as well. They are following the golden rule. Stalin is not following the golden rule. Just like there are christians that don't follow the 10 commandments. Even with in communism, some animals are more equal to others. That's not following the golden rule. There is objective morality and that is the golden rule. Stalin just doesn't believe in the golden rule.

+Brendan Coulter ofcouse those car salesmen don't like being lied to. But they expect it and accept it, every car salesmen when buying a car themselves knows the other guy is lying to them. They accept it. You are arguing for those that cheat the rules. There will always be people who cheat the golden rule, just like there are christian that don't follow the 10 commandments. That means nothing. It doesn't mean that the golden rule is subjective. "There is literally nothing objective about the golden rule in and of its self." That statement just doesn't make sense. You are gonna have to define what objective means to you. Objective as anyone would understand it is that its a set of rules that is well defined, and are not open to interpretation. If you don't like being lied to, don't lie to others. If you don't like being cheated, don't cheat others. Its very objective, there is nothing subjective about it. The golden rules is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." How is Stalin following those rules in any kind of scale? Stalin lives in luxury while his people live in poverty. We can objectively say, Stalin is not following the golden rule. Yes a man can be brutally honest, and in return he should expect others to be brutally honest with him. if he can dish it out but can't take it, then he is not following the golden rule. The golden rule stands on its own, its not flexible at all. I have no idea where you are getting this flexibility from. Perhaps from your own inability to follow the golden rule?

+Brendan Coulter There seem to be some confusion between a principle a foundation of morality to actual morality. Its a common misunderstanding with religious people who like to have their morality written down for them so they don't think about how those moralities came about. The golden rule is the foundation for a secular morality, its not the end all and be all of morality. Moralities like don't lie, don't kill, don't cheat. They can be derived from the golden rule, they can exist without religion. You can follow the logic behind those moralities and it ends with the golden rule. Example why don't we kill? Because the golden rule, that's the secular answer. The christian answer would be because of the 10 commandments. What ever Stalin did, or what moralities he violated, the same could of and have happened to religious people. Its not a problem with the golden rule that produced Stalin. And that last line in my previous comment was an unfair attack on my part. I apologize for that.
