1:43 The given speed, 31.6 mph (implied accuracy +/- 0.1 mph) is converted from 27 1/2 knots (implied accuracy +/- 1/2 knot), so it's really not as accurate as it seems. Boats use knots (nautical miles per hour) because 60 nmi = 1 degree of latitude. That means you can know where you are by travelling at a constant speed, and measuring time. For speed trials, you can calculate distance by measuring angles to points on land (churches, lighthouses, etc). Then you only have to measure time. If you make several timed runs, each at a set engine speed, you can make a graph that tells you your boat speed from your engine speed. The bit that I get stuck on is, how to measure engine speed.
