It seems a long way to me, too, but ... Google says a thunderclap is 160 -180 dB and sound travels at about 5 miles/sec. So you see the light, count the seconds, and multiply by 5 to get the miles. I give up counting at 15 seconds, so I don't think I can hear it at 75 miles. I'd guess the limit is more like 50 miles. Now sound travels about 4.4 times faster in water, so we might suppose it goes 4.4 times as far. That'd give a limit of 220 miles. We're in the ballpark. The rest might be explained by sensitiviy of a sonar reciever.
