  2. @ Van Houten who said "The sky isn't distinctly blue?" Here in the English Midlands, I've just done a quick survey. There are no discernible clouds. Towards the Sun (West) the sky is white. To the North, white with a hint of blue at the horizon changing to light blue straight up. Opposite the Sun (East) it's a grayish light blue (like storm-clouds), and South is again white at the horizon to light blue straight up. We do get beautifully blue skies sometimes, but not often - usually in summer in stable hot, dry weather. I've puzzled over this along time. It's a curious fact that, during the day, I can see the sky in the North. Compare that to sunset, when the sky in the East goes black. A black eastern sunset sky means no light is coming to me from there. So a white northern daytime sky means light of all colours is coming to me from the North. It seems to me it must be reflected light. That's as far as I've got in understanding it.
