The purpose of breaking through the enemy lines is to attack the rear areas; capture/destroy command/supply/support - the soft targets. If you're not going to do that, there's no point going anywhere near the frontlines.

@tailfirst The question is, were they German Army, or German civilians? If they were Army, then Germany has foregone its Nato protection.
