  9.  @lonniesides9302  Yes, the terrain was key. The Spartans chose that place (by getting there before the enemy, and waiting there. (Found it - Battle of Thermopylae) But think on; the Greek army was not going to Thermopylae - that was merely along the way. The Russians were not on their way to somewhere else, and they were never going to try to march straight through a Ukrainian strongpoint - they were there to destroy the holders of that strongpoint - thus they stopped. That's not a remarkable achievement. Whenever any traveller reaches their destination, they stop.
