  12. My point was that autobiographies - and biographies - are often terrible sources, as they were written to defend (or attack) - they are not neutral. First-hand remarks are also not neutral. Some criminal defendants' pleas are the greatest works of fiction devised by man.

South Africa is around 30S, Egypt is 30N - the Sun's at the right height, but on the wrong side of them, so East and West will swap over. If a man knows instinctively which way is North (ie facing the midday Sun) giving him a compass wont help - he'll see what he expects to see.
