The person who never made a mistake, never made anything.

If history teaches us anything, it's that whatever happens, it's Britain's fault.

Churchill said "I know history will remember me kindly, as I intend to write it myself."

I may be wrong, but I think the Soviets had an army in the East to guard against Japan - in which case the Soviets weren't fully committed, either. Edit - ah, you got that point, too.

Asking "who was the Axis" is like asking "who was Fleetwood Mac," after the first couple of names it gets complicated.
82
Merry Xmas, TIK. (Just coz they claim it, doesn't make it theirs.)
70
That's as far left as you can get!
67
@drewpamon ... By those who obviously didn't read his books.
63
I noticed on Wikipedia that General-plan East got watered down over the years, and General-plan West disappeared.
43
@freedomordeath89 You just reworded what I said, while denying the meaning of what you wrote!
34
Commies are taking over everything, and they don't like folk telling truths.
33
My point was that autobiographies - and biographies - are often terrible sources, as they were written to defend (or attack) - they are not neutral. First-hand remarks are also not neutral. Some criminal defendants' pleas are the greatest works of fiction devised by man.

Wulf Mussolini only made one train run on time - the one that took him to ... um,... Milan? Or was it from Milan to Rome?
23
3:35 "Pienaar reports a large force ... to the East, which is probably meant to be the West." The South Africans have actually got a good excuse for that. South Africa is around 30S, Egypt is 30N - the Sun's at the right height, but on the wrong side of them, so East and West will swap over. If a man knows instinctively which way is North (ie facing the midday Sun) giving him a compass wont help - he'll see what he expects to see.
21
@russelledwards001 You lie.
21
Speaking with zero authority, I think "Blitzkrieg" was a term made up by the UK press to describe to the British public a new tactic the Germans were using in the opening days of the war.
21
I keep seeing absurd claims that Britain caused the war by failing to defend Czechoslovakia.
20
The Brits took to gardening, and didn't have occupying troops stealing and destroying their crops. Brits also had POWs and Land Army girls working the farms. I'll bet evacuee children were also helping grow food.
16
Germans saw a link between the Dutch and the Deutsche? Me too.
16
It's an attack on a person's identity. "Happy is he whose name is well spelled."
15
@jeffreymcfadden9403 I'm English, and I have a hard time understanding English dialects.
13
I'd like to add my thanks to the patrons who make TIK's work possible, and without which I wouldn't get to learn so much. Cheers, guys, and merry Xmas to you.
13
Germany has long had strong ties with Turkey, and Turkey is the long-time enemy of Greece.
13
I agree, Turkey's a fortress.
12
From the Book of Arguments, Chapter 3, Verses 7 to 15. "Three shall be the counting of the hours, and the counting of the hours shall be three. Four shallst thou not count, and neither shall thou count to two - excepting that thou proceedeth on to three. Five is right out!" ... "Then lobbest thee thy history hand-grenade towards thy enemies, who, being naughty in thy sight shall shut up."
12
Goering wanted to recreate aurochs (big cattle) for his hunting forests.
12
otto Lincoln Superficially, your comment was completely pointless: a waste of your time, and everyone else's. But if you think about it, it's a self-answering question. You hate X, and you don't know why, yet you take the time and make the effort to tell people that you hate X. You hate X because other people told you they hate X, and you don't know why, because they didn't tell you why. So, you are spreading hatred of X without cause, and you wonder where hatred comes from.
11
@jeffreymcfadden9403 We English grew up watching American shows on tv.
9
@keithsledger6282 Several people here don't realize you can start a war without making a declaration - an act of war often suffices.
9
The trouble with putting men in the city is that they're harder to supply, and the more densely they're assembled, the more effective the German artillery becomes.
8
There was also a German judicial inquiry in the 1970s that opened the graves and came to a figure of 22,500.
8
Capitalism is a law of nature - each plant and animal must make a living - must work to eat. The cheetah is a capitalist. Socialism is also a law of nature - the family is socialist, the family meal is the redistribution of wealth. Parasitism is also a part of nature - Marx was a parasite.
8
No, TIK did not say "soldiers should pay for their ammo. You made a stupid strawman argument.
8
@calebmon Yes, he literally spoke (aot we, who are literally writing and figuratively speaking). That he literally spoke does not mean that his words must have a literal interpretation.
8
Stalin never had a job. He went from student priest to bank robber.
7
Oh TIK, you have low self-esteem. Your videos are utterly awesome. You get good and bad responses, and can only believe the bad ones.
7
Brilliant stuff - bravo, but one quibble - no, you can't just "go and live in the woods" - almost every aspect of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle is illegal.
7
TIK said the problem with minority governments is that they can't get anything done. In periods of stability/prosperity, the less governments do, the better.
7
@Razzberry And in the Spanish civil war, the various communist factions fought each-other: Orwell was nearly shot on his first day there for being the wrong kind of communist. And the various communist factions of the French Resistance spent more time fighting each-other than fighting Germans.
7
@TheImperatorKnight There are Wikipedia pages for James Bond and Sherlock Holmes. Maybe there should be equivalent pages for these fictional characters Hoffman and Allerberger. That's a way to "get the word out".
7
I contend that capitalism is a law of nature; the cheetah must get more energy from her food than she used to catch it - she must make a profit.
7
@calebmon In your paraphrase "if a soldier ...", do you see the word "if"? Do you understand the meaning of that word? IF A does X then Y, DOES NOT MEAN A should do X
7
Tik,when you said "don't spit out your coffee", you nearly drowned me! <cough>
6
Not just the deaths, but the demographics - the knock-on effect on marriages and births.
6
The military restrictions were economically helpful to the German people - a war-machine is a very expensive thing.
6
@stanislavnovikov8880 Condescension is not a valid argument - that's something you'll learn when you're older.
6
@soulknife20 No,, the crazy part was killing all the Poles that lived in the forest.
6
It's economics that produces tanks - along with everything else. The most vital thing to understand is that we are fed because there is profit to made by feeding us. Where there is no profit, there is no food.
6
Good questions, Naama.
6
They didn't go away - the Europe Union was the same goal by other means.
