@karapuzo1 Unnecessary additional complication of conscription. Can a volunteer afford his own equipment? If not, why not? He has a job.

It's interesting that you mentioned soldiers being unmotivated to recover equipment in Egypt. In the Merchant Navy sailors get salvage money for recovering ships and their cargoes. [Edit removed RN from my salvage claim because I don't know it to be true.]

@richardvernon317 Thanks, Richard. There's a movie about a convoy ship's crew abandoning and then re-boarding their own ship and getting salvage money.
