  1. There's a description of the filter at 49:21 - which to me, sounds like a bolt with scratched washers on it, and the tightness that the washers are squeezed together sets the size of the gap. (I'm not much on mechanics.)

  7.  @tarstarkusz  Fuses are slow. The British Standard for domestic fuses states they should carry a 50% overcurrent for 1 hour. Circuit breakers are also slow - but I don't know how slow. A brief spark may be a very high current, but only for a very short time - a fuse wouldn't notice it - a circuit breaker might not.
