@elterga6224 Peasants in England used to dig up coal in shallow mines that flooded regularly. Today an open-cut mine can reach hundreds of meters below the surface, and underground mines can extend even further. Today we literally move mountains to access our mineral reserves, without industrial infrastructure it would be inaccessible in large quantities.

@BostonCelticsfan21 You could 100% "get the right coordinates right off the bat", NASA didn't hit that asteroid by trial and error, they calculated it. The problem is that any failure at any point could end with radioactive waste raining on our heads. Just bury the stuff, it's not like it was safely stored to begin with (either in the temporary spots we use now or as uranium ore wherever it was mined).

@z3rz112 The K recovery is called late stage capitalism. The rich getting richer happened in the GFC and it's happening now. Houses are unaffordable in many places and debt is piling up. None of that is the fault of measures taken to protect citizens, it is the fault of governments prioritizing GDP and stock markets over actual jobs. Just because Europe and America fucked up doesn't mean the lockdowns failed. I live in Australia and we are open now, with no more cases, as is New Zealand. I don't know what Europe did wrong, but when half the US voted for the lunatic who thought this was just some flu, do you really think the lockdowns were followed completely responsibly? The economy explodes about once a decade, this isn't random. This is a system built on endless growth encountering decreasing birth rates and industry creation. Short of the next industrial revolution this is the new normal. When financial markets designed to fund the creation of real value become the most important part of an economy, the economy is fucked.

@elterga6224 Coal is vital to steel production, something far more important than oil. Without metallurgical coal, there are no engines to burn oil.

@ZebrAsperger How do you make any of that without factories and foundries and mines? You are correct, cars are inefficient, but you need coal and ores to produce that stuff.

@obrnenydrevokocur9344 , umm. As an Aussie were most states have gone weeks without a single case, I’m telling you this is much better for the economy, cause, you know, people actually go outside? Unemployment is high, but that was going to happen regardless, and thanks to the government boosting welfare it isn’t too bad (although now they are putting it down again, so it might not last long). Personally I’m hoping that this might crash the housing market so that it will reach affordable levels, but it doesn’t look too likely, the government here prioritises the housing bubble over just about everything.

@z3rz112 . The economy is good for quality of life, but most of it is discretionary. Most of the lockdowns in the world have worked and now we are getting our economy back on track, unlike certain unions I could mention.
