  2. All politicians are populists. This government, not unlike governments across the world, are doing what they think a majority of the British people want. No democratically accountable government wants to be seen with too much blood on their hands or have to deal with stories of overburdened hospitals with people dying in the corridors. This approach, to them, currently seems like the path of least resistance. COVID is transmissible, it is conspicuous and it predominantly preys on vulnerable people. The deaths and untold misery directly relatable to the years of measures undertaken to combat it remain largely below the radar and are apparently a price worth paying. How people will feel about this as the months and years unfold remain to be seen....
