  1. It is an inherent flaw, particularly in democracies for obvious reasons, but all politicians are 'populists' I'm afraid. Not just the likes of the much maligned Farages or Trumps of this world. This forthcoming vote will at least be rather informative as to quite how many of our elected 'populist' politicians calculate that a majority of electors and our fellow citizens secretly wish to live in an increasingly authoritarian state. As Benjamin Franklin said, ''Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
