I used to watch Newsnight religiously when it was on. Whilst its journalistic integrity slide began in the latter years of the Paxman tenure, Emily Maitlis regular hostings put the final nail in Newsnight's credibility coffin for me.

As an in principle supporter of publicly funded, ad-free, impartial broadcasting the bitter, depressing irony here is that 'BBC types' like Maitlis are seemingly making sure that future generations are deprived of the privilege many of us previously enjoyed growing up.

@briancarno8837 I agree. It's the anorak in me, but sometimes I watch the old, longer form interviews from the 70s and early 80s on YT. The Panorama Benn/Jenkins debate on the EEC was a gem. Some might say interviewers were a lot more deferential, but you were far more likely to learn an actual answer to a question and it was all the more respectful and civilised into the bargain.

@briancarno8837 Yep, and ain't we all the poorer for it. The problem now is that media today is so atomised that we can all go off and find our own little echo chambers. A truly impartial, non-profit driven BBC broadcasting to a nation and able to deliver a diverse range of views might have been an antidote to that, but years of the likes of Maitlis seem to have put paid to that idea.

@1chish JOB really is the lowest of the low. A despicable individual. All heat and never any light. The fact that he's one of LBC's biggest presenters says it all, as does Maitlis's decision to join him there.
