  1. Gates, a strident monopolist and staunch defender of IP rights, leveraged his influence as he had already donated $750m to the university for vaccine research. Sure, they could have said no, not least because their jab came from a publicly funded lab, but how might that affect the prospects for future overall funding from him and other wealthy donors?

  2. I'm amazed that Melinda Gates wants anything more to do with this. Perhaps I'm naive, but she seems like a pretty decent person to me whereas Bill is about the closest thing we're going to get to the Devil incarnate.
