I think there's definitely a hint of the knowing idiot syndrome in this saga. 'On/Off the spectrum' type stuff. They're SO maladjusted and not of this world types that surely they must know something us lesser mortals don't and couldn't ever hope to understand. They're just, 'SO crypto'. Much like the emperor's new clothes very few had the balls to stand up and admit what was always hidden in plain sight.
