The bottom line is, wherever you are pretty much, billions have been misappropriated and honest tax paying citizens who chose not to defraud are going to end up paying for it in numerous forms, including through inflation. Governments and state tax authorities likely don't give a sh*t because it'll ultimately have to be paid for anyway, just proportionally less by the people who stole it in the first place. Essentially they've set the precedent and posed the moral hazard should it happen again.
