  1. There will NEVER be cheap or free energy. Governments almost invariably are drawn to taxing anything they think they can get away with particularly necessities like energy, water and shelter for obvious reasons ie they're things most people have to use and access regularly in a modern, civilized society. What we're currently seeing with renewables is a carrot and stick approach - a combination of appealing to virtue, fear and guilt plus forcing up prices - in order to cajole people into changing their habits. Once those habits become embedded then the energy prices will gradually rise along with the taxes attached to them.

  2. Presumably UK exporters can align their products' specifications to whatever market they're exporting into in order to comply with their rules?
