Thanks to the huge public sector government debt it has created for over a decade and holds, the unelected BoE is effectively the most powerful institution in the UK. Moreso than the elected government itself. Though certainly no fan, Liz Truss was 'couped' when it pointedly chose not to bail her out over her bonkers budget. If you think about it, prior to this moment, the BoE didn't bat an eyelid at using QE to ease the UK government's debt woes, not least during covid when almost as much QE was done in 2020 alone than in the whole decade prior.
