  1. The fact of the matter is is that the US can afford to consistently run a huge trade deficit thanks to its exorbitant privilege. For now, the world currently still wants and needs USD to trade and the US can print as many they want for free. This effectively allows the country to suck in all these lovely tangibles from all over the globe in exchange for pieces of paper and US IOUs. As a result of this the 'too big to fail' US, the country with the world's biggest most lucrative and voracious consumer market, gets to export much of its inflation to foreign countries and the US consumer gets to benefit from cheaper prices thanks to this dollar dominance. It's the closest thing to a free lunch as you're ever going to get, so I'm still struggling to understand what Trump's rationale is here?
