The GBP's most marked fall actually occurred whilst the UK was IN the EU from 2000 to 2009. Why is this precipitous fall rarely remarked upon by commentators I wonder?

The UK's 'wealth creation' has been built upon its property market with its concomitant 'debt creation' for way too long. It is a policy that has helped propagate the illusion of wider wealth but has had wider longer term disastrous socio-economic consequences as a result. It is the establishment's one trick pony, toothless tiger and golden goose all rolled into one ugly beast. Little wonder they've expended decades of their expedient efforts into propping up the market as they now have little option but to do so.

Yep, there's money to be made if you're in government from that kind of regulation. Further to that, the big boys love it as it acts as an ever higher barrier to entry and keeps out the smaller competition.

The real killer in terms of central bank funny money creation, money that mostly benefitted the wealthy, was QE funding for covid 20/21. Most people still like to believe in the narrative of trickle down as if the already rich take this central bank largesse and invest it in something genuinely productive each time they're given these huge gobs of money. They don't. It often amounts to yet more state funded wealth extraction for the haves (the rentier class) at the enduring expense of the have nots.
