Twitter and FB have become the gotos of lazy, uncritical journalists over the years, all too often over-promoting, amplifying and misrepresenting non-issues as if they were somehow mainstream views. They have, in essence, served to undermine the credibility of both the profession and the product and the major casualty has been the truth. To find out that they have likely been hugely inflating the numbers of their genuine user base makes this much more of a story than it first appears.
