American interests in Israel only really took hold in the 1960s as part of its Cold War manoeuvrings and likely as an extension of its anti-communist Domino Theory that led it into Korea and Vietnam. Before that, outside of the region, there seems to have been a collective global brain wipe of the still less than a century old story of the state of Israel and the rise of Zionism that led to it. Even amongst Jews, both American and European, it wasn't really 'a thing' until the early 1900s and they effectively had to be lobbied in support of the idea.
