I'm certainly not anti-nuclear, but the French nuclear plants built in the 70s and 80s, initially spurred by the 70s oil crisis, are now experiencing serious legacy build quality issues. This had not been helped by the fact that they were all built in a relatively short time span, on similar specs using similar, often poor quality materials.

You can't place live links on YouTube, but there's this thing called Google. 'As of 9 February 2023 a total of 12 reactors were shut down, 8 of which were undergoing repairs for or investigations of corrosion issues that were first detected at Civaux 1 in December 2021'

@JewTube001 These were mainly stress corrosion issues, cracks and problems with welds. Civaux revealed leaks when pressure tested after other unrelated repairs releasing steam into the reactor room, although no nuclear fuel was present. Obviously there are far greater safety concerns associated with nuclear plants than with wind turbines or solar panels.

Great film. A must watch for any budding climate change cynic.

Point of fact, but the world is actually greening according to NASA. This, of course, doesn't negate habitat destruction which is happening, but interesting nonetheless.

@sapere7 Good to know. France has long been regarded as world leaders in nuclear generation technology for good reason. The UK having dropped the ball proper in the 80s. I think that, unfortunately, the big issue for some of those plants is the quality of the materials used at core construction ie steel and concrete rather than a lack of maintenance per se. Is that correct?

I don't see that as inconsistent, I see that as healthy. Dialogue is key. Those who seek to suppress that necessarily constant dialogue are the ones we need to worry about.

No!! They couldn't? They wouldn't? Surely?

@jfb3567 It's a sign of affection really, I'm sure.

With regard to energy the facts are: 1)Fossil fuels will eventually run out whether you believe they are contributing to climate change or not. I personally don't. 2) There will have to be alternatives and renewables make sense, but they're not reliable enough so we'll need a reliable base load if we are to continue on roughly as we are. 3) Most likely candidate for providing said baseload, currently, after fossil fuels have been exhausted is nuclear. 4)There is no one single answer to the world's energy needs going forward and we should be looking at a bespoke mix according to often vastly differing circumstances.
