  1. US and West are maintaining plausible deniability and will do so for as long as they can. Where they think this will go and how they think it might end is beyond me, but on the face of it Russia is showing extreme restraint in the face of extreme provocation.

  2. The US and its population, unlike Russia, have as of yet no real, direct experience of the horrors of war so perhaps it's little surprise that they continue to behave as they do. Empires, by and large, rarely significantly benefit their domestic great unwashed masses and the US is proving utterly true to historical form on that front.
