Israel ONLY really became seriously important to the US in the 1960s during the Cold War when both Soviet Russia and America sought competing influence over the fractious, oil rich, global trade pinch point region. Despite its 'socialist' genesis and ethos the country suddenly became viewed by the US and its allies as a useful bulwark and permanent irritant against growing Soviet socialist influence. People also conveniently forget that a prospective new state of Israel was explored by Zionists in places like Argentina and colonial Uganda.
