We in the West love 'a rebel'. 'Terrorist' not so much. Still, what's in a name?

The one thing that most people seem to agree on is that this rapid 'shock' conquest of Syria and sweeping away of the Assad regime could not have occurred without the full blessing of Turkey's Erdogan and was likely some time in the planning. The other, I think, indisputable fact is that this is more wretched news for the benighted Palestinians. Both of those assertions, if nothing else, particularly given Erdogan's recent shedding of crocodile tears for Palestinians in Gaza confirm what has been long thought about the Turkish leader and his complete untrustworthiness.

It's OK! Everybody stop!! Keir Starmer has just called for 'peace and stability'.

Has the Syrian thorn in both Turkey's and Israel's side truly been 'taken out' by HTS's success and Assad's overthrow?

The one thing that almost everyone says you can rely upon when it comes to dealing with Erdogan is that he's completely unreliable. He's a chancer and a survivor, but one day his luck will run out.

@Ā-KDJ Not sure if this is kosher, but if you want to see if a reply comment has been shadowbanned by YT view it in your comments. It's often not there in comments section, but if you re-view the original comment it's still there. Be interesting to hear people's views on this....

Someone in the ME, much like Cookie Monster Nuland was with her tasty bakes at Maidan, must be at the ready to hand out single shoes to 'jubilant, liberated protesters' for media consumption when these things go down. 😬

This will likely lead to another refugee crisis both for Europe AND for Erdogan's Turkey. A country which has long 'protected', at great enduring financial cost I might add, Europe from a massive influx of refugees fleeing ongoing unrest and persecution in the ME. A Turkish population that has also recently signalled to its establishment that it no longer was willing to accept ever more refugees. This then is an act of pure folly if it were fostered by Erdogan that would likely further destabilise an already reeling from both a refugee crisis AND the Ukraine war Europe as a number of countries increasingly shift further to the political right.

Nothing's ever binary and nobody knows for sure, particularly at this early stage. Could be another Libya though with all these factions at large. Stability seems unlikely in the short term plus a bloody revenge program against Assadists. Wider consequences too in terms of Russia which will be somewhat humiliatingly forced out of the country placing more emphasis and importance on the war in Ukraine. A war it cannot afford to lose. Also potentially wider consequences for both Hezbollah in Lebanon and for Iran.

@christianmccann9400 ...before they got the chance to loot them...

ALL extremely plausible. Don't you find it odd though that in a world of impending fossil fuel induced catastrophe that our governments, particularly those in the West, are so intent on grabbing and securing as much as they possibly can of 'yesterday's fuel' for themselves?

Because?

Alfred Nobel gave the world TNT before atoning for his murderous 'gift' with his eponymous peace prize. A cursory look down its list of recipients, including Obama, shows that the underlying irony at play with it lives on to this day.

Careful. He'll make your wine more Assadic.

To be fair, technically, 'the rebels' were keeping the banks safe from looters....

On the face of it it doesn't look like the triumph, albeit qualified and somewhat muted, that Western media is seeking to portray it as.

So the 'international rule of law' West is now surreptitiously cheering on a rebranded, softened at the edges Sunni 'responsible for 911' Al Qaeda, apparently minus its mad 'death cult' offshoot ISIS, on the basis that our (Shi'ite) enemies' enemy is our friend? Pythonesque doesn't quite cover it, does it?
