Henry Ford wasn't exactly the most benign individuals who ever walked this earth, but even he was capable of realising that it made sense to pay his own workers enough money so that they could afford to buy the products he was mass producing at the time for the American market. Globalization, outsourcing and deliberately leaky borders to encourage ever cheaper labour might have made things cheaper, certainly in the short term, but let's not pretend that this hasn't come at a potential huge longer term cost.

  7. Great phrase from presenter Basak, 'the politicisation of assets'. Western capitalism, primarily, lives and dies by the upholding of property rights. Throw that away and its second most important tenet, ' upholding the rule of law' becomes obsolete.

  8. If the US can burn through over $5trn in a couple of years on a relatively small scale pandemic like covid, a virus that targeted relatively small, easily identifiable, known groups, just imagine what it could spend on a far more serious, wide scale pandemic!!
