Speaking as an agnostic, God or gods aren't the problem. It's organised religion.

Mistaking deference for respect when it is really fear is the true mark of a bully.

@richardpayne I think that the human brain processes them similarly and at the primal level doesn't really differentiate.

@richardpayne Marxism, an essentially atheistic ideology, has likely killled far more people over a shorter period of time than any god. I'm not making the case for gods, merely that human beings will always find an excuse to do terrible things to each other regardless.

@richardpayne The ideology or the icons of that ideology simply replace the deity which can then provide the external superior authority to do bad things. I accept that its part of the human condition to seek out that higher sanction in order to justify evil acts and thereby absolve one from blame, but it amounts to much the same thing. Yes, having someone nobody can physically see, who can't actually speak and who can't be contacted helps this process enormously, but, again, it amounts to much the same thing.

@Butterfly-t6d Undoubtedly it's human nature. Religion and/or ideology - both things we're all susceptible to because they are suggestive of strong pathways, clear patterns and guaranteed solutions - provide the bones upon which to hang the flesh and provide the excuse for it.
