  2. What the UK actually needs is the unimpeachable right to free speech enshrined in law akin to the US first amendment. Not because free speech is a panacea, it comes with many obvious problems, but precisely because the alternative is this sort of dangerously nebulous subjective nonsense that can be all too easily weaponised by individuals, business and authorities.

I wrote to my local MP regarding this last year ie prior to this lunatic legislation, concerned about the claimed exponential increase in 'hate crimes' in England and Wales compared to other countries, including the US. Depressingly, the reply I got back was exactly as I expected and when asked if I could copy and paste it elsewhere I was politely told that they would prefer it if I didn't.
