Where are NATO's missiles placed, where are they pointing and how long have they been pointing there?

Bit of a cart before the horse argument that one. Are you seriously implying that the continued existence of NATO ideologically pretty much in its unadulterated pre-Soviet collapse Cold War form with Russia as its raison d'etre has got nothing to do with this?

Great discussion.

@AabaCabaA When Communism collapsed the continued reason for NATO's existence became questionable. Gorbachev was assured by the West that NATO would not expand any further East. This was why the Soviets agreed to German reunification. What we have seen is a continual push East and the EU having a hand in toppling the elected Ukrainian government in 2014. This war has been brewing for years and many have repeatedly warned against the US, NATO's and the EU's actions. Look back at some recent history.

The West doesn't have a great record on exporting Liberal democracy by force.

@AabaCabaA Struggling with the relevance of that I'm afraid. Locating and pointing missiles is in itself an aggressive act.

@AabaCabaA It most certainly wasn't just in reference to East Germany. I realise your attitude fairly reflects the Western consensus at the moment and it's a consensus I happen to disagree with and don't believe is born out by history. Still, as long as that remains the self-righteous consensus, then poor Ukraine will reap what we in the West have played a large part in sowing.

Presumably we can expect to see you on there next week putting in your learned two penneth Jonah?

@AabaCabaA I have a Russian sister in law and that's about the only Russian I know. Not the nicest of people tbh Regardless of your or my opinion of Putin, there are certain geopolitical realities at play that don't sit well with many in the West because we think too much in terms of good vs bad, absolving ourselves of all blame entirely. Ukraine has been given false hope by the EU, the US and NATO over the decades and has acted believing that it had their support and would one day become a member of NATO. They've been strung along basically. On current evidence, the only way to settle this is for Ukraine to confirm its future neutrality, as Zelenksy currently wisely proposes. This is easier said than done in the circumstances as he wants it confirmed by referendum. It also seems likely that the Russian speaking regions will have to be ceded. Unless, of course, many get their wish and Putin is deposed domestically, but that seems highly unlikely.
