  1. The solution to the war in Ukraine will likely result in the Russian majority areas of Ukraine being subsumed proper into Russia, including Crimea. Whether that will mean the remainder of the country becoming neutral or joining NATO remains to be seen and will be dependent on the settlement. The more Ukrainian territory the Russians can bag in the meantime can only strengthen their hand in negotiations. Better to have something to be seen to be giving back basically. Negotiations that will have to come. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Tragically all of this needless death and destruction could and should have been avoided in the first place though.

  2. There is a powerful ultra-right element in Ukraine and yet Western and UK media like the BBC and The Guardian that used to warn about it now dismiss it as pure Russian propaganda. Not that I'd ever trust Russian media understand, but this is why people in the UK no longer trust their own media.

Whilst true that Obama refused to send lethal weaponry to Ukraine for fear of escalating tensions with Russia as Mearsheimer points out, records show that Trump only subsequently did so extremely reluctantly and under extreme pressure from his aides believing it to be of economic benefit rather than a strategic proposition.
