Very gracious Peter, but shadow banning isn't 'a form of very soft censorship', it IS, or amounts to, censorship. Making sure your algorithm as good as buries a story or a view (that isn't criminal) in the internet age is the NEW censorship.

If our elected government wishes to criminalise the voicing of certain views then, prima facie, that's a perfectly legitimate aim but, by the same token, if it seeks to do so then it should be ready to endure the consequences of those lawfully objecting to it. That's kinda the point of democracy.

Charmingly naive Peter, but governments, or more precisely states democratic or otherwise, always monitor what their peoples say. The ubiquity of the internet has in many ways helped them to do their job more easily. The biggest downside for them is the sheer volume of stuff they have to monitor.

Anyone who imagines that the West sending tanks to Ukraine isn't a major escalation of this war by the West is naive in the extreme. There seems in the West to be this pathological tendency to see things ONLY through our own dualist perspective, never how it might be seen by those on the receiving end. In this case the Russians. Russia cannot afford to lose this war and, given that 45% of the worlds nuclear arms remain in its possession, we are, I believe, playing with fire.

The tragedy is that the covid experience has taught very few people anything. You don't have to be an apologist for Putin or the Ukraine invasion in order to see the duplicity and recklessness of the West in relation to Ukraine and provoking this. Basically, the world is black and white, binary, and Putin is the next Hitler and that's all most people care to understand. Putin might be a nasty piece of work, but I sometimes think there's barely a cigarette paper that separates him from many of his posturing Western counterparts I'm afraid.
