Supporting Ukraine has "become an article of faith that you are a good person'' for Western politicians. Couldn't have put it better Freddie. And it's not just our politicians either.

Mearsheimer is not a prophet but... Nobody can be sure what direction this war will take or how it might end, but he is certainly one of the most sane, rational voices out there on this subject. Disagreeing with some or all that he has to say is a perfectly legitimate position to take, however unqualified those objections often might be, but seeing many of the comments on here it's worrying how this brutal, once avoidable conflict seems to be little more than an opportunity for armchair generals and keyboard warriors to wave their willies from the comfort of their own Western homes.

Well I guess, on the current trajectory, we'll find out won't we.

@Ashayiii Let's hope not and that cooler heads prevail.

@Ashayiii In the circumstances I'd say that's academic.

Russia, along with the US, still holds 90% of the world's nuclear arsenal. This guy knows this and clearly you don't.

@thomastroy4857 That's where the Cold war MAD doctrine came in. AKA, 'you feelin' lucky, punk?'. The West is pushing it, it ain't good and it ain't worth it in my opinion.

The re-establishing of the former Soviet empire slippery slope argument in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine is and always was beyond absurd.

Sure, lock and load soldier!! Got your boots on and ready to go?

@bobby9623 'Invest' is the key word there. The West has invested nothing other than its money. Ukraine, along with Georgia, was always a red line for Russia. This was long, long known about, expresssed by Russia and yet we kept on pushing. Maybe you'll get your victory and, better still, from behind the safety and comfort of your own keyboard but, to my mind, we are seriously playing with fire here.

Well that's a f*ck sight better of a suggestion than I've seen to date.

'The plucky little guy', as Freddie puts it, could never be quite so 'plucky' without ever more western military hardware and money behind them. This isn't the David against Goliath existential struggle that western media seems intent on peddling and if it were it would be more applicable the other way round. Ukrainians, if nothing else, are outnumbered by Russian bods on the ground so, barring yet further interventions by the west, they're eventually going to run out of manpower on current form. Frankly, this ongoing situation is insane.
