Just read a Newsweek piece that points out that, unlike the US, Putin's really yet to 'lose' a war from Chechnya, Georgia to Syria. If nothing else, he has proved himself to be the ultimate 'brinkman' during his twenty plus years in power. Leaving aside the further complications of China/Taiwan dimension here, there seems to be this unquestioned assumption that Putin fully intends to occupy the Ukraine indefinitely and that Russia will simply become bogged down in a protracted, vicious, increasingly domestically unpopular, ultimately unwinnable guerilla war there. The article makes the point that perhaps total conquest is not his goal. His intentions might be more to drive Ukraine to the negotiating table, install a 'more amenable' regime in Ukraine and all whilst revealing and cementing the obvious cracks in NATO and the Western alliances in the process.
