For me the biggest mystery is why BoJo given his huge majority in 2019 didn't try and repeal the earlier Benn Act from the last parliament which contributed substantially to the UK and NI being in this mess in the first place.

Brexit was always first and foremost about sovereignty. It was a political act. A succession of our political classes have been effectively and willingly been castrated by the EU. Look at the ground that 'far right' is gaining in Italy. The MSM has long resorted to disingenuously calling her that in order to render her toxic in the eyes of Italians and other EU subjects. Aside from the fact that she is the first woman to ever lead Italy which the MSM has barely acknowledged her 'far right' credentials look decidedly poor to me. To date anyway. It's all about 'the optics' in political and media parlance nowadays apparently ie it's not how it is it's how it appears and if we can make something appear a certain way to as many people as possible then its job done and truth be damned.

Fromage makes a very good constitutional point here when he points to the, I think, unprecedented role King Charles has played in this. UK monarchs don't, for obvious reasons, get involved in politicking until the very last moment until agreement is reached, the ink is dry, it's okayed by parliament and only then does he/she give Royal Assent making it UK law. Yet again Charles has shown either his naivety, ignorance and/or overwhelming desire to meddle when it comes to UK constitutional matters and it does the institution of which he is only the temporary custodian of no favours at all.

Definitely open hostilities have ceased from the majority of remainers, but what we're seeing now are a succession of Trojan Horses being wheeled in order to try and sneak behind Brexit lines and deliver the weakest form of Brexit possible. Even the IMF and OECD have got in on the act now FFS!!

The GFA irrefutably and incontestably states that NI is part of the UK until such time as a majority there decide it isn't. The NIP was always in direct contravention of the GFA and was deemed by BoJo as the price worth paying in order to get Brexit done. A winning manifesto pledge incidentally that helped to give him a thumping 80 seat majority in 2019. Further to that his hands were tied by the earlier Benn Act which stated that the UK could not leave the EU without a deal.

Yep, much of all this is built on an entirely false premise and, in essence, flouts the GFA that everyone is apparently obsessed about upholding.

Used to have a reasonably high opinion of Steve Baker until I heard him interviewed by Stephen Edgington for the Torygraph.
