  1. Like Brendon, Rod Liddle made the case FOR the positive value of stigma and essentially being judgemental this week in the Spectator. Some practices just aren't socially positive, no matter what history informs them. Shooting up illegal drugs and defecating openly in the street, I feel, both fall into that category.

Definitely not universal, but rather like the charity system in the UK, once you get people invested personally in the business of 'helping' people, often drawing heavily from and depending on the public purse in the process and selling the idea to the world that what they're doing is virtuous these things inevitably become self-perpetuating and a habit that is the Devil's own job to break.
