The fact that this is all went on under global governments' noses and in most cases these weren't ever 'currencies' as such merely taxable capital assets always smelt funny to me

@victoralejandrotrimmerestr3672 I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt on that absurd remark and assume you're being sarcastic.

@s3ra9h1m The only thing I do know is that nothing surprises me nowadays.

Utter genius really. Not only the biggest financial fraud/ social experiment) of the century, but likely the biggest financial fraud the world has ever seen or likely will see. Madoff was the known, traceable, ultimately jailable head of a more or less US based Ponzi scheme whereas Satoshi Nakamoto - I have a strong feeling 'he' was a 'they' - was unknown, remains unknown and thus unjailable and operated on a truly epic global scale. Throw in some BS about democratizing and decentralizing money and sprinkle with a little with various other myths like how it would end inflation and emasculate Central Bankers 'et voilà'... ...supper is served, suckers.

The real scandal here is that governments not only allowed this to happen for years also there was next to no regulation of what are now, I believe, around 18k thus far created cryptocurrencies.

Any of these high profile people who promoted this guff, particularly those who did so knowingly like Bieber, and took their 30 pieces of silver for doing so should be ashamed of themselves.

Bang on. Never were cryptos 'currencies'. In and of themselves currencies are only worth the paper they're written on ie intrinsically worthless. They are accepted tokens of exchange issued by governments that will effectively only accept them as payment for taxation.

Imagine how the global reaction to covid with loads of locked down bored people, many on furlough, sitting at their computers for hours on end (or equivalent) contributed to all this mania. Tech stocks went through the roof during that time and we were all told this was the future from now on in so little wonder that the tech-based cryptocurrencies that shadowed these stocks followed them.

@Frozander Whatever lofty naive/dubious ideals you or others might want to imbue this whole sh*tshow with, they more or less all became speculative pump and dump vehicles preying on the dumb, the desperate and the greedy, hence the reason why governments' enduring hands off role was by turns baffling and unforgivable.
