Ukraine is not in NATO so it has no legal duty to defend it but it does have an arguable vested interest in supplying the Ukrainian forces with arms to fight a proxy war with Russia. Not only does such a policy allow Nato to degrade and assess the Russian military it can do so without spilling a drop of NATO soldiers' blood which would quickly become politically difficult in the West. Further to this, a head on NATO/Russian conventional war would undoubtedly degenerate into a nuclear exchange pretty rapidly as neither Nato nor Russia have an enshrined policy of NFU, No First Use, unlike China and India. It's also been noted recently that NATO, because of the sheer amount of ammunition and equipment that's been sent to Ukraine, is itself running short of its own supplies.

@ryanwalters6184 Russia has, by default, elected to pivot towards China and the RoW and away from the West because of this invasion. Even before it it was sometimes referred to as China's gas station. This does indeed render it a quasi-vassal of China, but it in no way changes the view that Russia cannot afford to and will not lose this war. Its military doctrine allows for a preemptive nuclear strike if it feels its sovereignty is threatened and/or it feels it is losing a conventional exchange that might prove existential. Now I'm sure that China does indeed hold immense sway over the Russians at the moment, but if either of those criteria mentioned above look like they're being met then China's current influence would become moot.
