Labour is unelectable in no small part due to the weight it places on its progressive agenda and all the endless nauseating virtue signalling that goes with it. It turns its core vote off. Not because they're racist, misogynistic homophobes as it often seems fashionable to paint them as, but because they have far more pressing, basic, very real needs and concerns that Labour seems only vaguely interested nowadays in paying lipservice to. It might have its appeal to certain groups on certain parts of the country but that very 'progressiveness' ensures that a good many will grit their teeth come election time and elect yet another crappy, self-serving, begrudged crumbs from the high table Conservative government by default. Identity politics and running down your country is still, on balance, not an election winner and as long as they keep ploughing that furrow they're always going to play second fiddle.
