"We have liberated Europe from fascism, but they will never forgive us for it" - Soviet General Zhukov.

Venezuela wasn't exactly Trump's finest hour either.

Word to the wise. Terrorism isn't terrorism as long as its perpetrated by a state that respects the US defined 'international rules based order'. Simples.

Condoleezza Rice stated in 2014 in a German TV interview EXACTLY what the US plan was vis-a-vis European reliance on cheap Russian energy. It is the ultimate smoking gun for what followed and it is still on YT for those interested.
34
Certainly edging that way.
30
'Show restraint' is code for 'don't you dare retaliate'.
28
A very suspect individual, no doubt. Raises serious questions about the source of the story that led to him and his partner becoming so revered in the first place.
27
I never knew TikTok was SO influential...
23
The US led West simultaneously urges Iran to show restraint and then, just as with Russia, views any restraint as a sign of weakness. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't basically.
20
I'm ashamed to say that I live in a country that is patently on the wrong side of history. Truly depressing.
18
The now unelected Zelensky who allegedly decided this is no longer the legitimate leader of Ukraine ergo he is, by definition, not a democrat and Ukraine is no longer democratic.
12
Not just Germany, we ALL, both in Europe and the US, have much to be ashamed of both in terms of Ukraine and Gaza.

In a democratic system freedom of choice is paramount.... The way round this, of course, is to ensure that there's very little to choose between the deliberately restricted choices on offer. THAT is the MO used as a sop to placate those naïve enough to actually believe they still live in 'liberal' democracies.
11
No one does branding and marketing quite like the Americans.

As far as I understand things, Iran has a longstanding fatwa/religious decree against developing nuclear weapons. Its primary driver for wanting to develop nuclear technologies is, I believe, as an alternative source of domestic energy. Let's not forget, amidst all of this, that only ONE country has EVER used nuclear weapons in anger - in that case deliberately on civilian Japanese populations - and that Israel's PM Golda Meir threatened to deploy Israel's nuclear weapons in the ME during the Yom Kippur war in 1973 unless Western support was forthcoming.

Being ignorant here, but if Korean public opinion is so pro the ruling party and anti the opposition why was the last election so close, why can't the ruling party call another election if it's now sure to win more clearly and why were so many Koreans opposed to the declaration of martial law by the ruling party?
7
Yep. Concessions were apparently made by the EU assuring Ireland's neutrality. US Military flights out of Shannon Airport suggest this isn't going too well.
6
JFK might have been marginally better than his peers before or since but the bar isn't set that high I'm afraid.
6
Given that all these devices work on a bandwidth of frequencies, it doesn't seem unreasonable to imagine that ANY such devices that do are potentially lethal weapons.
5
Yep, but the rot started with Kinnock.

Interesting and highly informative perspective, but it doesn't necessarily just fall to a relatively diminutive Denmark to develop Greenland if that is your hope. The world is full of corporations and expertise that would be willing to do so for a profit and arguably in the interests of both the indigenous and Danish people. Denmark doesn't need to sell Greenland then in order to achieve that, it only has to have the willingness do so.....
4
@ZappyOh Something is rotten in the state of Denmark then. It seems more than obvious to me that if Denmark sells or even gifts Greenland to the US the very things that it is apparently 'virtuously' attempting to avoid will happen anyway. As long as it gets it indigenous population on board - which sounds like it wouldn't be an issue - then it could be a win/win for both the Danish and Greenlanders.

Pray for us all!!

The more you come to rely on debt creation the more you acquiesce to the will of the faceless, unaccountable all powerful financial markets and the more you ultimately undermine your democracy. History is a window on the future.
4
In 2008 Ukraine was constitutionally neutral when Nato was making its advances toward it to join its military alliance against Russia. I mean WTF????
4
Regarding the US role in Europe, Putin called America's bluff when he offered to join NATO. America had to at first seem receptive to the idea for appearances sake but it was obvious that there was never ANY way that it was going to let Russia, its historic competitor, assume what would've amounted to eventual far greater influence over Europe.

Harris is the proverbial last turkey in the Democratic shop.
4
Ursula 'fond of lying'. 💕
4
@beneytan9440 The fact that my reply to you has been deleted by YT and yours remains says it all.
4
Economics and politics are inseparable. Alistair understands that. We are forever mortgaging our future. Kicking the can down the road. At some point this WILL stop, whatever the 'harkers' might claim.
4
Great Pink Floyd reference to end with there and very apposite.
3
Europe's fate as a undisputed vassal of the US was sealed when Biden blew up NS2 and nobody in Europe, least of all Germany who part owned it for godsake, said a thing.
3
Never let a good crisis go to waste....
3
Romanian democratic election first round was apparently subverted by a Russian Tiktok post. They're just so damned canny those Russkies aren't they.
3
@ninarao4063 Therein lies the rub. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of good is the only way to reconcile these clearly imperfect situations.
3
@flyrodmike It's much like the now Trump led US threat to pull its NATO forces out of Europe unless the member countries pony up more dough. It ain't gonna happen.
3
@flyrodmike It's really tedious isn't it. They're definitely becoming more 'rigorous' in the prosecution of truth tellers.
3
I'm absolutely mortified that my country, the UK, has chosen to undertake this utter folly that could lead us to ruin. Does no-one in our government or Whitehall understand the ramifications of this? It's nothing short of insanity.
3
Do some reading on the long history that led up to 2022. Plus can you cite actual proof of NK troops in the battle with Ukraine?
3
By means of ever more effective methods of mind manipulation, the democracies will change their nature; the quaint old forms… elections, parliaments, supreme courts and all the rest… will remain. The underlying substance will be a new kind of Totalitarianism. All the traditional names, all the hallowed slogans will remain exactly like they were in the good old days. Democracy & freedom will be the theme of every broadcast & editorial. Meanwhile, the ruling oligarchy and its highly trained elite will quietly run the show as they see fit. Aldous Huxley, 1962
3
High Enough by Damn Yankees is actually a pretty damn good song Max, I'll have you know😊
3
Too 50/50 to say for definite.
3
I don't think it's unique in that. Certainly in European terms.
3
@haroldb1856 Carter said 2016 result was stolen. Nuff said.
3
Depriving and denying a resource rich nuclear Russia, Europe's biggest country by far, any serious role in the continent is utter and complete madness. Imagine the American continent depriving and denying the United States a say. This is power politics at its most reckless, self serving, myopic and stupid.
3
Not if you're in the EU it isn't. It's become accepted practice.
2
If 'Greenshill Grifter' Cameron could become foreign secretary then there's no good reason why the Mince of Darkness Mandelson shouldn't become US ambassador.
2
JDV might well have a fair point about free speech and jiggery wokery in Europe, but to use that as the excuse for walking away from a war his country long fomented, effectively started and largely funded is pretty lame IMHO.
2
Israel and this whole charade provides America with plausible deniability. 'Even US fails to rein Israel in' etc goes the current MSM narrative. What a load of BS. The US, or THE essential nation, as Biden describes them has been angling for a war with Iran for years now and we're witnessing that plan finally coming together. It's certainly more complex than the WMD lie that took the US coalition into Iraq, but this whole sorry episode stinks to high heaven.
